Dr. Michael Masterman-Smith

Dr. Michael Masterman-Smith is a leading cancer biologist, bioengineer, and entrepreneurial scientist. His co-discovery of the brain cancer stem cell (CSC) was deemed a high impact discovery by the National Cancer Institute for providing the first evidence of these highly malignant tumor-initiating cells in soft tissue cancers.  Since this discovery, CSCs have been found in many cancers and this work has helped shift cancer drug development toward finding treatments directed at these unique, deadly cells. As one of the UCLA California NanoSystems Institute (CNSI) inaugural scientists, his efforts developing lab-on-chip technologies yielded new single cell diagnostic approaches for cancer and cancer stem cells. In looking for inhibitors of CSCs, his work studying >30,000 drugs proved agonists of cannabinoid receptors CB1 and CB2 as potential breakthrough treatment for cancer stem cells.  Currently he is co-founder and Chief Scientific Officer of a start-up pharmaceutical company focused on diseases of unmet clinical need, including cancer, pain and brain injury.  In 2018, Dr. Masterman-Smith joined twenty other healthcare candidates running for federal office in his bid to represent California’s 25th Congressional district. His campaign focused on policies that would reduce the opioid epidemic, improve health care quality and reduce its costs. Peer-reviewed publications cited >2400 times (top 1% of life sciences citations), 3 patent filings.
